Booking dental treatment abroad is a big decision, and the travel side can feel like the biggest unknown. The good news: getting to Tirana from the UK, Ireland or the USA is simpler than most people expect. This guide covers what you actually need to sort out before your dental trip to Albania – flights, passports, how long to stay, money, connectivity and what we arrange for you once you land.
1. Getting to Tirana: Flights From the UK, Ireland and the USA
Albania’s main airport is Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA), about half an hour by car from the city centre and from our clinic on Rruga e Kavajës.
| Flying from | Typical route | Approx. flight time |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Nonstop from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton (British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air), plus seasonal routes from some regional airports | Around 3 hours |
| Ireland | Nonstop from Dublin with Ryanair, several days a week | Around 3.5 hours |
| USA | No nonstop service – one connection via a European hub such as London, Rome, Vienna, Istanbul or Frankfurt | Varies by route |
Many of our patients also come from Italy, Spain and the rest of Western Europe, where Tirana is often less than two or three hours away. For travellers from the US, that wide network is useful: you can connect almost anywhere in Europe, or combine your treatment with a few days in Italy or elsewhere on the way.
Schedules change from season to season, so check current routes when you book. If your treatment plan qualifies, we can also help with the travel arrangements – more on that below.
2. Passports and Entry Rules
Albania is not in the EU or the Schengen Area, but entry is straightforward for our main markets:
- UK citizens: no visa needed for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months after the day you leave Albania.
- Irish citizens: no visa needed for short stays. You can travel on your passport or Irish passport card.
- US citizens: no visa needed, and you can stay up to one year. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months from arrival and have a blank page for the entry stamp.
Entry rules can change, so always double-check the official advice before you book – for example GOV.UK or the US State Department.
3. How Long to Stay in Tirana
Your length of stay depends on your treatment, and you will know it before you book anything:
- Whitening or a single filling: often one or two days.
- Veneers and crowns: a few clinical steps spaced a day or more apart, plus time for lab work. Plan for at least 3 to 5 days, depending on your case.
- Dental implants: usually two trips – one to place the implant and a second, a few months later once healing is complete, for the final crown.
After your consultation, we give you a realistic day-by-day itinerary, so you can book flights and time off work with confidence. Tirana sits on Central European Time – one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland, and usually six hours ahead of the US East Coast – which is worth remembering for appointment times and calls home.
4. Bring Your Dental Records and X-Rays
If you have recent X-rays, a treatment plan from another dentist, or notes about allergies, medication or medical conditions, bring copies – digital or printed. Sending them before you travel helps our team plan your case accurately and avoids repeating scans that were taken recently.
5. Costs, Currency and Payment
The local currency is the Albanian lek (ALL), but euros are widely accepted in hotels and many shops, and card payments are standard at the clinic. Change pounds or dollars at a bank or exchange office, or simply use your card – just check your bank’s foreign transaction fees before you go.
Price is the reason many people first look at dental treatment in Albania. Compared with private dentistry in the UK, patients can save up to 70%, and the difference against typical US prices is often larger still. We confirm your all-inclusive quote before you travel, so there are no surprises once you land – the price you are quoted after your consultation is the price you pay.
6. Staying Connected
Check your mobile plan before you go. Roaming charges in Albania can be high on UK, Irish and US contracts, so an eSIM or a local SIM card is often the cheapest way to stay connected.
7. Pack for the Season
Tirana is mild for much of the year, hot in summer and cooler than visitors expect on winter evenings. If your treatment leaves your teeth sensitive to hot or cold for a few days, comfortable layers and soft, easy food make recovery days more pleasant. Between appointments, the city is easy to explore – Skanderbeg Square, the Grand Park and the Dajti cable car are all close by.
What We Arrange for You
You will not be navigating a new city alone. For our international patients we provide:
- Free car transfers between the airport and the clinic.
- For larger treatment plans, a free consultation and cleaning on your first visit.
- Multilingual patient coordinators who help with travel planning – and, depending on your treatment, we may cover your flight and hotel.
- Aftercare instructions and follow-up support once you are back home.
