Dental Implants 101: What Actually Happens, Step by Step

Share:

Dental implants have a reputation for being complicated, mostly because the marketing around them tends to skip the actual steps. Here is a straightforward walkthrough of what happens, from the first assessment to the finished tooth.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a permanent tooth replacement system that mimics the entire structure of a natural tooth — root and crown. Unlike a bridge, it doesn’t rely on adjacent teeth for support. Unlike a denture, it doesn’t move. With proper care, it can last a lifetime.

The three components

  • Titanium implant post — a small screw, typically 3.5–5mm in diameter, that is inserted into the jawbone. Over 3–6 months, the bone fuses around it in a process called osseointegration.
  • Abutment — a connector piece that attaches to the implant post and protrudes just above the gumline. It holds the final crown in position.
  • Crown — the visible tooth. At HMC we use zirconia crowns as standard: ceramic, metal-free, and colour-matched to your surrounding teeth.

Dental Implant Costs Across Europe

The price of a dental implant varies enormously depending on where you get it done. The table below compares average all-inclusive costs (implant post, abutment, crown, and standard consultations) across the most common source markets for dental tourists.2

Why Are Dental Implants Cheaper in Albania?

The lower price reflects lower operating costs — not lower standards. Albania has a significantly lower cost of living and commercial property cost than Western Europe. A well-equipped clinic in Tirana pays a fraction of what the equivalent space costs in London or Dublin. Those savings pass directly to patients.

  • Lower labour costs — salaries for dental professionals in Albania are considerably lower than in the UK or Germany, even when accounting for European-equivalent training.
  • No NHS overhead — private clinics in Western Europe often carry hidden costs from regulatory and insurance structures that don’t apply in Albania.
  • Currency advantage — for patients paying in GBP, EUR, or CHF, the exchange rate compounds the savings further.
  • Shorter supply chains — HMC sources implant systems (Straumann, Nobel Biocare) directly from manufacturers, cutting distributor margins.

All-on-4 and All-on-6 Costs at HMC

For patients who have lost most or all of their teeth in one arch, the All-on-4 and All-on-6 systems offer a full fixed bridge supported by just four or six implants. Below are HMC’s 2025 package prices.

All-on-6from €3,6006 per arch4–5 days2 visits

Implant bridge (3 units)from €1,40024–5 months2 visits
All prices are per arch and include consultation, CBCT scan, surgery, temporary prosthetic, and final zirconia bridge.

What’s Included in the Price?

Unlike some clinics that advertise a low headline price and add charges later, HMC’s quoted price is all-inclusive for standard implant cases. Here’s what the fee covers:

  • Initial consultation and 3D CBCT scan — a cone-beam CT scan to assess bone density and plan implant placement precisely.
  • Implant surgery — placement of the titanium post(s) under local anaesthesia, performed by a specialist implantologist.
  • Temporary prosthetic — for All-on-4/6 cases, a fixed temporary bridge is fitted the same day so you never leave without teeth.
  • Final zirconia restoration — your permanent crowns or bridge, custom-shaded to match your desired result.
  • Post-operative care — follow-up consultations during your stay in Tirana and remote check-ins after you return home.

Payment and Financing Options

HMC accepts payment by bank transfer, major credit and debit cards, and cash in EUR or GBP. A deposit of 20% is required to confirm your appointment; the balance is settled on arrival. For larger treatment plans, staged payment schedules can be discussed with your treatment coordinator.
