Straightening your teeth with clear aligners usually means months of appointments every few weeks. For most adults that is the real obstacle: the time off work and the regular trips to a practice, not the aligners themselves. Having clear aligners abroad can take most of those trips out of the picture.
At Health Medical Center in Tirana, aligner treatment is built around a different rhythm. You come once to start, you straighten your teeth at home, and you come back once to finish. This guide walks through exactly how clear aligners abroad work, stage by stage.
Custom aligners, made for your teeth
Every aligner case at HMC is made in our partner dental laboratory. There is no off-the-shelf system and no standard tray that gets adjusted to fit you. Each set is made for your teeth from your own impressions, with every stage of movement planned in the lab.
That matters because aligners only work as well as the plan behind them. Each tray moves specific teeth a small distance. If the plan is precise, the teeth follow it.
Visit one: 4–5 days in Tirana
Your first trip takes 4–5 days and covers everything needed to start treatment with clear aligners abroad.
Assessment and impressions. Your dentist examines your teeth and bite and confirms aligners are the right approach for your case. Impressions are taken and sent to the laboratory.
Your aligners are made. The lab plans the movement of each tooth and produces your full series of trays.
Attachments are placed. Once the trays are ready, you come back to the clinic. Small tooth-coloured buttons, called attachments, are bonded to certain teeth. Their positions come directly from the lab’s instructions, and they give the aligners something to grip so they can move teeth more precisely.
Creating space where needed. In some cases the dentist polishes a tiny amount of enamel between certain teeth to create the space the plan needs. This is planned in advance, not decided on the day.
You then fly home with all of your aligner trays.
At home: a new tray every two weeks
This is where most of the treatment happens. You switch to the next tray in the series every two weeks and wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush.
Each new tray will feel tight for a day or two. That pressure is the aligner doing its job, and it eases as the teeth settle into position.
Because you already have the complete series, there is nothing to wait for and no need to travel back for new trays. That is what makes clear aligners abroad practical: treatment fits around your normal life at home.
Visit two: checking the result
When you have worked through all of your trays, you return to Tirana so your dentist can check the result.
If the result is right, which it usually is, the attachments are removed, your teeth are polished, and you receive your final retainer.
If a tooth needs a little more movement, we add more trays to finish the treatment properly. Stopping just short of the result you came for is not an option.
Why the retainer matters
Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their old positions, especially in the first months after treatment. Your retainer holds them where the aligners put them. Your dentist will tell you how often to wear it, and following that advice is what keeps your result in place for the long term.
Are clear aligners abroad right for you?
Clear aligners work well for a wide range of adults, including crowding, gaps, and teeth that have shifted after previous braces. They are not suitable for every case: severe bite problems, large jaw discrepancies and some major rotations may need a different approach. Your dentist will tell you honestly which group you fall into.
The easiest way to find out is to start with a free online consultation. Send us a few photos of your smile and our team will come back with an initial assessment.

Frequently asked questions about clear aligners abroad
How many times do I need to travel to Tirana?
Twice in most cases: clear aligners abroad at HMC need one 4–5 day visit to start treatment, and one return visit when you have finished your trays.
Do I take all my aligners home at once?
Yes. You leave with the complete series, which is what makes clear aligners abroad work: you change trays every two weeks without coming back to the clinic.
What brand of aligners do you use?
None. Every set is custom-made in our partner laboratory for your teeth, from your own impressions.
What are the buttons on my teeth for?
Attachments are small tooth-coloured bumps that help the aligners grip and move teeth precisely. They are removed and the teeth are polished once treatment is complete.
What if my teeth haven’t fully moved by the end?
Your dentist checks the result at your return visit. If any tooth needs more movement, we add more trays to finish the treatment.
Do aligners hurt?
Most people feel pressure or tightness for a day or two after switching to a new tray. It settles quickly.
Do I need a retainer afterwards?
Yes. You receive your final retainer at the end of treatment, and wearing it as advised keeps your teeth from moving back.
Is the consultation free?
Yes. The online consultation is always free, and it is the easiest way to find out whether clear aligners abroad suit your case.
